What leaves your device, and what does not.

CalyOS does most of its work right on your machine. Here is every feature that can send something out, and the switch that turns it off.

The short version

Local first, always.

Open a document, edit a photo, search your files. On CalyOS that work happens on the computer in front of you, not on someone else's. A handful of features do reach out, because they have to: checking for an update, syncing a folder you chose to sync, filtering spam before it lands. Every one of them is listed below, in plain words, with the switch that turns it off. Nothing here is buried.

The line

Two kinds of work.

Stays here

The everyday things never leave

Your files, your photos, what you type, the apps you open and the settings you change all live on your machine. CalyOS does not stream your work to us to make it run. Pull the network cable and the computer keeps doing its job.

Leaves on purpose

A few things reach out, and only these

Updates, cloud backup, folder sync and mail filtering need the internet to do what they promise. Each one is opt-in or clearly switched on, each one is named below, and each one has an off switch you control.

Every feature that reaches out

Feature by feature.

Checking for updates

CalyOS asks our servers whether a newer version exists. That is the whole request.

To keep itself patched, your machine contacts us to ask what the current version is. It sends the model and the version it is running, nothing about you and nothing about your files. You can set updates to download on their own, ask first, or check only when you press the button. To stop the automatic check entirely, turn off Automatic updates in Settings. You can still update by hand whenever you like.

Cloud backup

Copies of your files go to our cloud only if you switch backup on.

Backup is off until you turn it on. When it is on, CalyOS copies the folders you chose to CalyCloud, encrypted before they leave the machine, so a lost or broken computer never costs you your work. Turn it off in Settings and nothing more is sent. Your existing backups stay in your account until you delete them, and you can delete them yourself in one place.

Folder sync

Only the folders you mark as synced are shared between your machines.

Sync keeps a folder the same across the computers you sign into. It moves only the folders you pick. The rest of your machine is not touched and not seen. Unmark a folder to stop syncing it. Turn sync off completely and each machine keeps its own local copy, with nothing travelling between them.

Mail spam and phishing filters

Incoming mail is checked before it reaches you, so the risky ones are held back.

If you use Calyraen mail, messages are scanned for spam and known scams as they arrive. The check reads the mail you are already receiving. It does not reach into the rest of your machine. You can loosen the filter, tighten it, or switch it off and take every message as it comes. Mail you send and receive is yours either way.

Diagnostics

If something crashes, CalyOS can send a report so we can fix it. This is optional.

When an app falls over, the system can send us a technical report of what went wrong. It describes the fault, not you, and you decide whether it goes at all. Diagnostics are opt-in during setup and can be changed any time in Settings. Leave them off and CalyOS never sends a report. It works exactly the same either way.

“Your work is yours. The machine's job is to keep it that way, and to tell you the truth about the few times it has to reach out.”
Our data promise
What holds it together

The quiet guarantees.

Four things that stay true no matter which switches you flip. Open any tile for the full picture.

On by default means local by default

A fresh CalyOS machine keeps your work on the machine. You opt in to anything that leaves.

When a Calyraen machine comes out of the box, the balance is set toward the machine. Your files, your work and your settings stay local, and the features that send anything out are either off until you turn them on, or shown to you clearly during setup. We never flip that balance behind your back. A feature that reaches out is one you switched on, or one you were told about in plain words and can switch off in the same breath.

What we do hold stays in Europe

Backups and account data sit in European data centres, under European rules.

The things we do hold for you, your account details and any backups you turn on, sit in data centres inside the European Union. That decides which laws protect them, and it means European privacy rules apply to all of it. Nothing drifts to servers overseas to save us money. If a customer or a regulator asks where your data lives, the answer is one word: Europe.

We cannot read what you store

Your backups are scrambled with a key that stays with you, so we hold noise, not your files.

Backups and synced folders are encrypted on your machine before they travel, with a key tied to your account. What arrives on our side looks like noise to us. That is deliberate. We would rather not be able to read your files than ask you to trust that we choose not to. It also means a break-in on our end hands an attacker nothing readable.

Delete means delete

Ask us to remove something and it goes, including from backups on their normal cycle.

When you delete something from your account, it goes. It also leaves the backups we keep, on their normal rotation, rather than lingering somewhere forever. You can remove your backups yourself from one place in your account. If you ever want a full copy of what we hold about you first, you can ask for it and have it in days, not months.

How to turn a feature off

Off in three steps.

Every switch on this page lives in the same place, in words a person can read. No hidden menus, no support ticket.

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy

One panel lists every feature that can send something out, grouped the way this page is. Nothing is tucked three menus deep.

  2. Read what it does

Each switch says, in a sentence, what it sends and why. If a plain sentence cannot explain it, we treat that as a bug to fix.

  3. Flip the switch

Turn it off and it stops at once. CalyOS keeps working, and it will not quietly turn itself back on later.

Questions

Asked and answered.

Does CalyOS work with no internet at all?

Yes. The everyday work, your files, apps and settings, runs offline. You only need a connection for the features that reach out on purpose, like updates and backup.

Do you sell or share my data?

No. We do not sell your data and we do not hand it to advertisers. The features listed here send what they need to do their job, and nothing more.

If I turn everything off, does the machine still update?

Only when you choose to. Turn off the automatic check and CalyOS stops reaching out for updates, but you can still install them by hand whenever you want the latest security fixes.

Where can I see this while I use the machine?

The same list lives in Settings under Privacy, with the switch beside each item. This page and that panel say the same thing.

No small print

The whole story fits on one page.

That is on purpose. If a promise about your data needs a lawyer to read it, it is not a promise you can trust. When something changes here, the page changes with it.
