Self-order kiosk

A fixed, customer-operated ordering station for quick-service and retail. It takes the order and the card on its own, drops the ticket straight onto your kitchen display, and does it on the payment account you already hold.

The problem

The queue is the order you lost.

At the busy hour a counter takes one order at a time and the line does the rest. People who will not wait leave, the ones who stay give a rushed order and forget the side that pays for the meal, and a member of staff who could be making food is stuck reading a screen back to a customer. Adding a till means adding a person, and the person is the part you cannot hire. A kiosk changes the shape of the problem: four screens take four orders at once, each one unhurried, each one offering the same add-ons every time without being told to, and each one taking the payment itself. Staff move from the till to the pass. The queue stops being the limit on how many people you can serve.

A 21.5 inch projected-capacitive panel takes ten touch points through gloved or wet fingers and runs at 1080p behind a bonded, anti-glare cover glass, so the menu stays readable under shop lighting and a low sun through the window. The compute is a fanless SoC running CalyOS Embedded in locked kiosk mode. There is no desktop, no browser and no way out of the ordering app, so a customer cannot reach the operating system and the station returns to the menu on its own between orders. Brightness, standby hours and the attract loop are set per site from one place.

The payment bay holds a PCI-PTS certified reader wired semi-integrated to the kiosk. The kiosk only ever sends the reader an amount and gets back an approved or declined result; the card number is encrypted inside the reader by point-to-point encryption and never enters the ordering app or your network. That is the point of the design. It keeps card data off the kiosk, keeps your PCI assessment to the small SAQ that P2PE allows, and lets you keep the merchant account and the card rates you already negotiated. There is no cash path and no ATM, so there is nothing to empty or reconcile. Contactless EMV, chip-and-PIN and NFC wallets are read by the same unit.

The enclosure is folded, powder-coated steel with an IK08 impact-rated front, built to take a full trading day of hands, bags and trolleys without a fan to pull in grease and dust. The same head fits a bolt-down floor pedestal, a counter plinth or a wall bracket, so one product covers a drive-thru vestibule, a deli counter and a lobby. The face is a single flat pane that wipes clean between customers and meets an IP54-class front seal against splashes and cleaning spray. Cable entry and the payment bay lock behind the service door. Colour and vinyl are specified to your brand at build.

How it works

One order, start to pass.

A customer walks up, builds exactly what they want without a queue, pays on the card in their pocket, and the ticket is on the kitchen display before they have pocketed the receipt. Here is each step and what happens behind it.

The journey

From wake to collect

  1. Wake

    The attract loop invites a touch; one tap opens the menu at the top category. Dwell time and idle return are tuned so the screen is never mid-order when the next person arrives.

  2. Build

    Categories, modifiers and combos with photos and allergen tags. Every add-on prompt is a chance to upsell, offered the same way every time without a staff member having to remember.

  3. Pay

    The total goes to the reader, the customer taps or inserts, and the reader returns an approval. No cash, no drawer, no card data on the kiosk.

  4. Fire

    On approval the order posts to your POS and drops onto the kitchen display as a ticket, with a collection number printed for the customer.

  5. Collect

    The kitchen works the KDS queue and calls the number. The kiosk has already reset to the attract loop for the next order.

Categories, prices, photos, modifiers and out-of-stock flags are edited once and pushed to the whole estate over the air. A price change or a limited-time item lands on every kiosk within minutes, and a sold-out item greys out the moment the kitchen marks it, so a customer is never sold what is not there.

The kiosk talks to your point of sale and kitchen display over a documented API, so a self-ordered ticket routes exactly like a counter order. Order numbers, modifiers and course timing carry through, and reporting stays in the POS you already reconcile against, not a second silo.

Each unit reports power, network, printer paper, reader status and app health to one dashboard. A jammed printer or an offline reader raises an alert before a customer meets it, and a kiosk that loses power recovers straight back into the ordering app on its own.

Acquiring

Link your own acquirer

There is no locked-in payment processor and no revenue share on your takings. The reader wires to the merchant account and acquirer you already use, so you keep the card rates you negotiated. It reads contactless EMV, chip-and-PIN and NFC wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. There is no cash acceptor and no ATM, so nothing has to be filled, emptied or reconciled at close.

Card data never touches the app

The reader is PCI-PTS certified and wired semi-integrated. The kiosk sends it an amount and receives back only an approved or declined result and a token; the full card number is encrypted inside the reader by point-to-point encryption and never enters the ordering app, the kiosk operating system or your store network. That keeps your assessment to the small SAQ that a P2PE setup allows, instead of putting the whole estate in scope.

Accessibility

Built to EN 301 549 and ADA

The touch zone sits inside the ADA forward-reach range, between 15 and 48 inches from the floor, with the 27 inch portrait body for a lower entry point. A 3.5 mm jack takes a headset for private audio navigation, the interface reads aloud and can be driven step by step without sight of the screen, and a high-contrast, large-text mode meets EN 301 549 contrast ratios. Modifiers and prices are spoken, not just shown.

Whose merchant account takes the money?

Yours. The reader wires to the acquirer and merchant account you already hold, so takings land where your counter takings do and you keep your negotiated card rates. We do not sit in the payment flow or take a cut.

How small does our PCI scope get?

With the semi-integrated P2PE reader, the card number is encrypted in the reader and never reaches the kiosk or your network, so a typical estate qualifies for the reduced SAQ P2PE. We give your assessor the design evidence for it.

Can someone who cannot use the touchscreen still order?

Yes. A headset in the 3.5 mm jack drives the whole menu by audio, the interface reads items and prices aloud, and a high-contrast large-text mode is one tap away. The reachable touch zone and the portrait body meet ADA and EN 301 549.

Does it take cash?

No. The kiosk is card and contactless only by design, which removes the cash-handling, the ATM-style safe and the reconciliation, and keeps the enclosure sealed and simple. Keep one staffed till for cash customers if you need it.

    We confirm floor space, power, network and the reach and sightlines for each kiosk, and agree floor, counter or wall mounting per position.

  2. Install

    Enclosures are bolted or bracketed and cabled, usually in a single visit after close, with no trading time lost.

  3. Integrate

    Your menu and prices are loaded, the reader is linked to your acquirer, and the POS and KDS connection is tested with real test orders end to end.

  4. Go-live

    The estate is switched to your branded attract loop and watched live through the first trading day, with an engineer reachable in real time.
