Window advertising display

A storefront-facing screen built to stay readable in direct sun and cool itself behind glass, run by one remote CMS across every site you operate.

The problem

Glare

A screen that looks bright indoors disappears the moment it faces the street. At 700 nits behind shop glass the picture washes out by mid-morning, and by afternoon the space between the glass and the panel turns into a solar oven. Standard commercial panels clear to black near 70 C when the liquid crystal passes its isotropic point, so the display blanks exactly when the sun is strongest and footfall is highest. Then there is the fleet problem. Twelve stores means twelve USB sticks, twelve people climbing into window bays, and no way to prove an ad actually played. This display is engineered around those two failures. It holds 3000 nits at the glass with active cooling that keeps the panel below its clearing point, and every unit checks in to one CMS that schedules content, dims on a clock, and logs proof of play.

The cover is 6 mm chemically strengthened glass with an anti-reflective coating that cuts front-surface reflection to under 1.5 percent. It is optically bonded to the panel with a clear silicone resin, so there is no air gap for dust, condensation, or internal reflection to form. The bond also conducts heat off the panel face into the glass instead of trapping it. The result is a picture you can read with the sun directly behind you at the window.

A commercial-grade IPS LCD driven by an LED backlight rated at 3000 nits sustained and 4000 nits peak. Local dimming across the backlight zones lifts contrast and cuts power when the content is mostly dark. The panel is a semi-industrial grade specified to a 110 C isotropic clearing point, the temperature at which liquid crystal loses its alignment and the image blanks. Holding the panel well below that point is the entire job of the thermal core.

Two thermistors, one at the backlight and one in the air channel, feed the cooling controller. A sealed front chamber keeps the street side clean while filtered fans pull air across the rear of the panel and exhaust it at the top. Under a 45 C afternoon the panel typically sits under 8 C above ambient. If a fan fails or intake blocks, the controller cuts backlight current in stages and reports the fault to the CMS before the panel ever reaches its clearing point.

An RK3588 system-on-chip plays content locally so the screen keeps running if the network drops. It reaches the CMS over Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, or an optional 4G LTE modem for windows with no wired drop. Status, brightness, temperature, and proof-of-play logs go up over MQTT, and content and schedules come down over HTTPS. A hardware watchdog restarts the player if it hangs, so nobody has to visit the site to reboot a black screen.

The whole design starts from one number: keep the panel below the temperature where liquid crystal blanks. Sensed forced-air cooling and an optical bond that wicks heat into the cover glass do that job in a sealed street-facing chamber. Everything else is built around keeping that picture on.

A front photodiode reads street light and scales the backlight from full sun down to a night setting, so the ad is never blinding after dark or invisible at noon.

3000 nits at the glass

The LED backlight is rated 3000 nits sustained and 4000 nits peak, measured at the cover glass after the anti-reflective coating, not at the raw panel. A front-mounted photodiode samples ambient light and scales output continuously, so the display tracks the sun from an 8 percent night floor to full daytime output. Because the front is optically bonded there is no internal reflection to grey out blacks, which is where most cheap window screens lose their contrast.

Sensed forced air

A thermistor at the backlight and a second in the air channel feed a controller that ramps filtered fans against real panel temperature, not a fixed timer. Air enters low, crosses the rear of the panel, and exhausts at the top. In a 45 C window bay the panel typically holds under 8 C above ambient, well below the 110 C clearing point where liquid crystal blanks. The street-facing chamber stays sealed so cooling never pulls dust into the light path.

Staged cutback

If intake blocks or a fan fails, the controller does not simply shut off. It drops backlight current in steps to shed heat while keeping the ad visible, raises an alert in the CMS, and only blanks as a last resort. That means a clogged filter becomes a maintenance ticket, not a dead window during your busiest hours.

Answers

Will it black out in a south-facing window in summer?

That is the exact failure it is built against. Sensed cooling holds the panel under 8 C above ambient and staged cutback protects it further, so it keeps running where a standard commercial panel would clear to black near 70 C.

Does full brightness run up the power bill?

Auto-brightness and local dimming mean the panel only draws full backlight when the sun demands it. On a clock it dims at dusk and sleeps overnight, so a 55 inch unit averages far below its peak draw across a day.

What about condensation on cold mornings?

The optical bond removes the air gap where condensation forms, and the sealed front chamber keeps humid air off the light path. The cover glass warms with the backlight, so any external misting clears quickly.

Content & fleet

One

A window screen is only useful if you can change what it shows without sending someone to the site. Every display checks in to one hosted CMS over HTTPS. You upload artwork or video once, drop it into a playlist, and target it by store, region, or a single screen. Schedules run on the device clock, so a lunchtime offer starts at noon whether or not the network is up at that moment. Status, temperature, brightness, and proof-of-play logs flow back over MQTT, so the fleet view shows you which screens are live, which are dimmed on schedule, and which need a visit. Roles keep a regional manager from touching another region's content, and every change is logged with who and when.

Build a playlist once and set it to run by hour, day, or date range. The device plays from its own clock and storage, so a scheduled spot starts on time even if the connection drops.

Proof of play

Every spot is logged with a timestamp and screen ID, exportable per advertiser. You bill for exactly what ran, and you can prove it.

Roles and audit

Regional and store roles scope who can change what, and every content and setting change is recorded with who and when.

Health alerts

Fan faults, high panel temperature, offline screens, and low storage raise alerts by email or webhook before a customer sees a problem.

A floor-to-ceiling tension pole clamps between floor and ceiling with no fixings into the glass, frame, or listed shopfront, which matters for leased and heritage units. A ceiling drop bracket adjusts from 300 to 900 mm for high transoms. Both hide cables inside the pole or arm.

Power and data

One cable if you want it

The unit runs on a standard 13 A socket and reaches the CMS over Wi-Fi or the 4G modem, so many installs need power only. Where a wired drop exists, one Ethernet cable carries data, and there is a low-voltage option for tidy runs.

Every size mounts portrait or landscape and the panel is IPS, so the picture and colour hold from steep street angles. The CMS knows each screen's orientation and formats content to match.
