Why this page exists

Answers, not a maze.

Most help pages bury the one thing you need under ten you don't. This one is built the other way round. Read the notes from our workshop, look up a word you keep hearing, or jump straight to the page you were after. If you still can't find it, a person is one message away.

Big words, made small.

The industry loves its jargon. Here's what the common terms actually mean, in the words we'd use to explain our own work to a friend.

Nothing floats in the sky. The cloud is a building full of computers that a company keeps healthy so you don't have to. For you it means your work is there on any device you sign in on, and a broken laptop becomes an inconvenience instead of a disaster. With Calyraen the machine on your desk stays yours. The cloud is the part we look after, and it's the one thing we ask you to pay for month to month.

Your laptop works for one person. A server works for everyone: it holds the shared folders, runs the tools the team uses, and answers requests all day. In a small office it can sit in a cupboard and look after every desk without anyone thinking about it. You never really see it. You just notice that everything the team shares is always on.

A backup copies your data to a second place, on its own, while you work. If someone deletes the wrong folder on a Monday, a good backup brings back how things looked before. You shouldn't have to remember anything or plug anything in. The safety net is simply there, quietly, whether you ever need it or not.

A good migration is boring on purpose. Everything gets copied across in the background and checked before anything switches over, usually over a weekend. You sign in the next week and your work is where you left it, only faster. That's the whole show.

When a provider quotes 99.9 percent uptime, that still leaves almost nine hours of downtime a year. The number sounds perfect and isn't. What really matters is how rare the hiccups are and how quickly they get fixed. No honest provider promises a flat 100 percent.

Questions

Asked and answered.

Is any of this behind a login?

No. Everything on this page is open to read. You only sign in when you want to reach your own account or files.

Do I need an IT background to follow the guides?

No. They're written for the person who runs the business, not the person who runs the network. If a step needs a technical word, we explain the word first.

Where do I go if I can't find an answer here?

Send us a note. A person reads it, in your language, and stays with it until the thing you asked about actually works.

Are there subscriptions hiding anywhere?

The machines and their software are yours once you buy them, updates included. The cloud is the one part you pay for month to month, and only if you use it.

“The best manual is the one you never have to open. Everything we write here is a backstop, not a requirement.”

Tell us what you're stuck on.

Two sentences is plenty. A person reads every note and writes back within one working day. No ticket numbers, no queue music.

No account needed. We only use what you type here to write back with a sensible answer.
