The problem

Queues

A fixed counter can only serve one customer at a time, and every extra second in the line is a sale that walks out of the door. At a Saturday peak the queue backs past the fixtures, staff are pinned behind a till they cannot leave, and the stockroom question, do you have this in a medium, means a walk to a back-office PC. Consumer phones in a card sleeve crack in a month of drops, lose the session when the battery dies mid-transaction, and put card data on a device no auditor will sign off. What the floor needs is a terminal a colleague can carry all day, take a payment anywhere, scan an item and read its stock on the spot, and drop on concrete without a cracked screen or a lost sale.

A PCI-PTS 6.x approved reader sits inside the same body as the screen and scanner, so a colleague takes chip, contactless and swipe without carrying a second device. Card data is encrypted at the read head under point-to-point encryption, so clear card numbers never touch the operating system or your network. Without it, a card sleeve on a phone puts the transaction on a device no acquirer will certify, and every drop risks the reader. With it, the tap-to-approved path runs under a second, the terminal is EMV L1, L2 and L3 certified, and the same unit handles a refund, a partial and a tip. The payment stack is identical across every model in the range.

A dedicated 2D imaging engine reads 1D and 2D barcodes, QR and codes that are crushed, curved or under shrink wrap, at the pull of a side trigger. It focuses and decodes in well under a second where a phone camera hunts and fails. Every scan hits your inventory system live, so a colleague on the floor answers is this in stock, in a medium, at the other branch, without walking to a back-office PC. Price checks, click-and-collect picks and goods-in receiving run on the same engine. The imager is bore-sighted and hardware-triggered, so it works in gloves and in a cold store where a touchscreen scan will not.

The body is sealed to IP65 against dust and rain and tested to MIL-STD-810H, including repeated 1.8 m drops to concrete and a tumble cycle, so a dropped terminal keeps trading instead of going to a repair pile. The battery is a hot-swap shift pack. A small internal reserve holds the session and the open transaction for up to 60 seconds while a colleague clips in a fresh pack, so a flat battery at a Saturday peak costs a swap, not a lost sale or a re-login. The same sealed chassis and swap mechanism carry across the range, so a fleet shares one set of spares.

Contactless covers Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with the tap-to-approved path under a second. Point-to-point encryption encrypts the card at the read head, so clear card numbers never reach the operating system, the app or your network. Refunds, partials, tips and gratuity all run on the same head.

Accessibility

Payments everyone can make

PIN entry meets accessibility guidance for cardholders who cannot see the screen. A tactile locator and a headphone jack drive audio-guided PIN entry, so a customer enters a PIN privately without staff assistance. On-screen contrast, text scaling and a distinct tactile 5 key follow the same guidance, and the flow is validated against EN 301 549.

On payments.

Is card data ever on the device or our network?

No. Point-to-point encryption encrypts the card at the read head, so clear card numbers never reach the operating system, the app or your Wi-Fi. Your environment stays out of scope for clear cardholder data, which keeps your PCI-DSS assessment small.

Which acquirers and schemes are supported?

The reader is EMV L1 to L3 certified and works with the major UK and EU acquirers. Contactless covers Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay and Google Pay. We certify the terminal against your acquirer as part of the rollout.

Can a customer who cannot see the screen enter a PIN?

Yes. A tactile locator and audio guidance over a headphone jack walk a cardholder through PIN entry privately, without staff seeing or assisting. The flow follows accessibility guidance and is validated against EN 301 549.

A magnesium frame in an over-moulded elastomer bumper, sealed to IP65 against dust and rain and tested to MIL-STD-810H, including 1.8 m drops to concrete on every face and a tumble cycle.

A 6 inch chemically strengthened glass display, bright enough to read in shop-window daylight, with a touch mode that works through gloves and after a rain shower.

Battery

Hot-swap shift pack

A shift battery lasts a 12 hour day, and an internal reserve holds the open transaction for up to 60 seconds while a colleague clips in a fresh pack. A flat battery costs a swap, not a lost sale.

Why it matters

Swaps, not spares runs.

Most handheld fleets do not die from one dramatic drop. They die from a slow bleed: a phone-and-sleeve setup that cracks in a month, a battery that fades to a half-day by week six and strands a colleague mid-transaction, and a repair pile that quietly shrinks the working fleet before the next peak. The rugged body ends the first problem, because a 1.8 m drop to concrete is a design case, not an accident. The hot-swap shift pack ends the second, because a fading battery is a two-minute swap from the dock, not a terminal out of service. And because one sealed chassis runs the whole range, a store keeps a single small pool of spare bodies and batteries instead of a drawer of dead phones. The result is a fleet that is still all on the floor when the Saturday rush arrives.
