The problem

The device is the lesson, until it breaks.

A consumer tablet handed to a nine year old does not last a term. Screens crack on the floor of a corridor, juice gets into the keyboard, and by half term a tenth of the fleet is in a drawer waiting on a repair nobody budgeted for. The devices that survive bring a second problem: a class of pupils on the open web, a filter that only works on the school wifi, and no record for the safeguarding lead when something is typed that should raise a flag. Then exam week arrives and there is no way to lock a device to one paper. What a school needs is not a cheaper tablet. It is a device engineered for a classroom, a filter that follows the child home, and a console where one technician runs three hundred of them at once.

The chassis is reinforced polycarbonate over a magnesium inner frame, wrapped in a raised rubber bumper so a corner drop lands on rubber, not glass. The screen is Corning Gorilla Glass 3, recessed 1.5 mm behind the bezel so a flat face-down drop does not touch it. Without that, a fleet loses a tenth of itself to cracked glass and drowned keyboards inside a term. With it, the keyboard is sealed to 330 ml and drains through channels in the base, the ports are recessed so a bent charger snaps the cable not the socket, and the 180 degree hinge is rated to 25,000 open-close cycles. Every laptop and tablet in the range shares the same drop and ingress standard.

Devices ship pre-registered to your tenant, so a pupil powers on, joins the school directory and lands on their apps with no technician touching the device. Policy, apps and the filter push down before first sign-in. Without that, a rollout is a technician imaging three hundred machines by hand over a summer. With CalyOS Fleet, one console holds the whole fleet: install and remove apps, force updates in a maintenance window, locate a device on a floor plan, lock it if it walks out of the building and wipe it if it is not coming back. The console is the same whether the device is a laptop or a tablet.

The content filter runs on the device, not just on the school network, so the same block list, SafeSearch enforcement and age-tiered categories apply on the school wifi, at home and on a phone hotspot. Without that, filtering ends at the school gate and the safeguarding lead has no record. With it, on-device keyword monitoring flags terms mapped to KCSIE and Prevent categories and raises an alert with a screenshot to the designated safeguarding lead, and exam mode locks a device to a single app or URL with clipboard, camera and other apps disabled. Every flag is logged with time, device and pupil for the safeguarding record.

Durability is not a rubber case bolted onto a consumer tablet. The chassis, the seal, the hinge and the battery are engineered to a written standard and tested to it. Here is what the device is made of and what it survives.

Chassis and drop

Lands on rubber, not glass

The shell is 3 mm reinforced polycarbonate moulded over a magnesium inner frame, with a raised rubber bumper around every edge so a corner drop is absorbed before it reaches the electronics. The panel is Corning Gorilla Glass 3, recessed 1.5 mm behind the bezel, so a flat face-down fall lands on the frame. The whole unit is tested to MIL-STD-810H: 90 cm onto plywood and 70 cm onto concrete, on 26 faces and corners, and it still boots.

Sealing and ingress

Spill sealed, ports recessed

The keyboard membrane is sealed to hold 330 ml of liquid and drain it through channels in the base rather than into the board. Ports are recessed and reinforced so a pupil tripping over a charger bends the cable, not the socket. The speaker and vent grilles are baffled against dust and eraser shavings so the acoustics survive a year in a bag. There is no fan on the tablet at all, which removes the single most common ingress path.

Battery and thermals

Lasts a school day, charges at break

The battery is sized for 12 hours of mixed classroom use: browser, a video, a document and the filter running the whole time. It charges to 50 percent in 45 minutes over USB-C, so a cart tops up over a single break. The cell is rated to 1000 charge cycles while retaining 80 percent capacity, which is roughly three school years, and it is a serviceable part on a captive screw rather than a glued-in pouch.

Durability questions

The hard wear.

Is the battery replaceable or glued in?

Replaceable. The battery sits behind a service hatch on two captive screws and swaps in under two minutes, so a device at year three gets a fresh cell rather than being retired. Screens, keyboards and hinges are serviceable parts as well.

How is the drop rating actually verified?

To MIL-STD-810H Method 516.8: 26 drops across every face, edge and corner from 90 cm onto plywood and 70 cm onto concrete, and the unit has to power on and pass a functional check after each. We hand over the test report, not just a marketing figure.

What happens when a screen does break?

It goes into the swap pool. A spare is issued the same day, the broken unit is repaired at panel level not written off, and the cracked one comes back into the pool. A single cracked screen never takes a pupil off a device for more than a lesson.

Enrolment

Powers on and joins itself

Devices leave the factory registered to your tenant, so a pupil opens the lid, connects to wifi and the device joins the school directory, pulls its policy and lands on the right apps with no technician touching it. That is zero-touch enrolment and it takes under five minutes per device with no imaging. A device that is factory reset re-enrols itself the same way, so a wipe does not create an unmanaged machine.

Filtering

The filter follows the child

Content filtering runs on the device itself, so the same age-tiered category blocks and enforced SafeSearch apply on the school network, at home and on a phone hotspot. Year groups get different policies: a year 3 device and a year 11 device do not see the same web. The block list updates centrally and there is no way for a pupil to switch to a different browser or a VPN to escape it, because those are blocked at the policy layer.

Exam mode

Locks to one paper

Exam mode is pushed to a class from the console and locks each device to a single app or a single exam URL. Clipboard, camera, screenshots, notifications and every other app are disabled for the duration, and the device cannot leave the exam until a supervisor releases it. It works offline, so a dropped wifi connection during an assessment does not open the rest of the web. The lock lifts on a schedule or on command.

Does this meet our safeguarding duty?

The keyword monitoring maps flagged terms to KCSIE and Prevent categories and routes an alert with a screenshot, timestamp, device and pupil to the designated safeguarding lead, which is exactly the appropriate monitoring the statutory guidance expects on a school-managed device. We provide the mapping so your DSL can review and tune it.

How is the device hardened?

Each device ships to a CIS Benchmark Level 1 baseline and the fleet is built to support a Cyber Essentials submission: enforced updates, no local admin for pupils, disk encryption on by default and the management channel signed and authenticated. We hand over the configuration evidence for your assessor.

Where does pupil data go?

Filtering and monitoring run on the device and report into your own tenant, which can be hosted in the UK or EU to keep you inside UK GDPR and your ICO obligations. We sign a data processing agreement and there is no advertising identifier and no third-party analytics on the device.

Is the hardware itself certified?

Yes. The devices carry UKCA and CE marking, meet IEC 62368-1 for electrical safety and EN 55032 for EMC emissions, and the batteries are UN 38.3 tested for transport. Certificates ship with the fleet documentation.
