Teacher workstation

The problem

Lessons stall at the front of the room.

The first five minutes of a lesson are spent waking a tired tower, waiting for a login that thinks about it, and hunting for the cable that drives the panel. The board goes to sleep mid-explanation. The cast to the tablets drops when the room fills. A fan whines under the desk and dies in July, and a teacher loses a period to a machine that was never built for a classroom. What a room needs is a PC that wakes in seconds, knows the teacher by their staff card, throws the board to thirty devices without a stutter, and has no fan, no spinning disk and nothing to fail in front of a class. That is a purpose-built workstation, not a recycled office box.

A single link kit carries 4K video to the interactive flat panel at 60 Hz over HDMI 2.1, and returns the panel's touch and pen as a standard USB HID device, so annotation lands where the teacher taps with no calibration ritual. HDMI-CEC wakes and sleeps the panel with the workstation, so one press of the sign-in reader brings the whole front of the room to life. There is no second remote and no input-source hunt. The same link kit drives 65, 75 and 86 inch panels.

The workstation broadcasts the board to student laptops and tablets over the school network, up to 35 devices in a class, so a pupil at the back reads the same screen as the pupil at the front. It also receives, so a pupil can cast their work up to the panel with Miracast or Google Cast for the room to mark together. Frames land in under a second on Wi-Fi 6, and the stream degrades to a lower resolution before it drops. Cast runs on the LAN and does not route a lesson through the public internet.

A teacher taps their existing MIFARE DESFire staff card on the reader and is signed in to their own desktop, files and bookmarks in under three seconds, in whatever room they are teaching that period. The profile roams from the directory, so cover staff and specialists who move between rooms get their own setup on any workstation rather than a shared generic login. A PIN is there for the day a card is left in a coat. Sign-out is automatic on a timeout or a second tap, so the next class does not inherit an open mailbox.

The chassis is a sealed fanless mini PC with no fan to clog with chalk dust and no hard disk to fail. Heat leaves through the case, so it runs silent through a full timetable and a warm summer classroom. Storage is M.2 NVMe, so wake and file open are near instant, and there is no moving part to jolt when a panel is knocked. It mounts to a VESA 100 bracket behind the display, out of reach of the class and off the desk. All-day operation is the design point, not a burst rating.

The workstation lives in a standby state between lessons rather than fully off, so a tap on the reader brings it and the panel up in under eight seconds. There is no spinning disk to wait on, no fan to spin up, and no full boot between periods. Overnight it patches and sleeps, so the first teacher of the day meets a machine that is ready, not one that is still thinking about updates. Modern standby is set in the management profile, not left to chance.

Silent by design

No fan, no dust, no whine

Heat leaves the sealed aluminium case by conduction, so there is no fan to pull chalk dust and paper fibres through the machine and no bearing to wear out mid-year. Silence matters in a room where a teacher is talking over it, and a fanless design removes the single part most likely to fail in a classroom. The M.2 NVMe drive has nothing to spin, so it survives a knocked panel and opens a large slide deck without a stall. Fewer moving parts is fewer call-outs.

4K to the panel, touch straight back

Video goes to the interactive panel at 4K and 60 Hz over HDMI 2.1, so text on a slide is crisp from the back row and video does not tear when it moves. The panel's touch and pen return over USB as a standard HID device, so annotation on top of any app lands where the teacher's hand is, with no per-lesson calibration. A whiteboard mode and pen work over PDFs, browsers and the exam board's own software, because the ink sits at the system level rather than inside one app.

Media and sound

Audio, camera and a visualiser, ready

Sound routes to the panel speakers or a room amplifier over the same HDMI link, so a clip plays with picture and audio in sync and at a level the class can hear. USB-C and USB-A on the front of the mount take a document visualiser, a webcam for a live experiment, or a teacher's own drive without reaching behind the display. HDMI-CEC ties the panel's power to the workstation, so there is one thing to turn on and one to turn off.

How it behaves in a room.

Does the pen work over any app?

Yes. Annotation sits at the system level, so a teacher can write over a PDF, a browser, a slide deck or the exam board's own software, not only inside one whiteboard app. Notes save to their roaming profile.

What happens if the panel is turned off first?

HDMI-CEC keeps the two in step, so turning the panel off sleeps the workstation and a tap on the reader brings both back. There is no state where the board is dark but the machine is burning power under the desk.

Can it drive an 86 inch panel and a projector?

The link kit is sized for 65, 75 and 86 inch panels, and the workstation has a second output for a projector or a confidence monitor where a room runs both.
